Presidenta de USF pide apoyo a ex-alumnos y comunidad universitaria / USF president calls for support from alumni and university community

The letter that follows is a call from Dr. Judy Genshaft, President of the University of South Florida system, to the USF community and alumni to defend public education and its institutions.  It shows how important it is for public universities and their administrators to stay independent from party politics, especially in these times where political and economic forces insist on dismantling institutions of higher education through the reduction of course offerings and budget, and the unjustified intervention into issues fundamentally academic.  This letter also demonstrates how important it is for the administration to retain its loyalties with students, the communities it serves, and the development of knowledge and research if their genuine interest is to preserve and develop the UNIVERSITY.

The Florida Senate is proposing a total cut of $128 million to the University of South Florida, including a 60 percent cut to our appropriation for academic affairs. If passed, the cuts would be immediate and devastating to USF’s students, its research and its contribution to the economic recovery. Seguir leyendo

The Florida Senate has unleashed a two-pronged attack that, if allowed to stand, will damage higher education and cripple the University of South Florida.

The first salvo was the latest twist on the plan to transform USF Polytechnic in Lakeland into the state’s 12th independent university, initiated by Senate Budget Chairman JD Alexander last year. The Board of Governors, while acknowledging the absence of evidence that such a new university is needed, voted to set Polytechnic on a steady road to separation that would safeguard its students’ interests.  Seguir leyendo
